Who was the last driver in F1 to regularly drive in an alternate series, just for the joy of motor racing?

Motor Racing
headsiwin asked:

Thx Julian. Informative as ever.
The reason I ask is because of the previous question.
You know, F1 drivers spend an inordinate amount of time training (a legacy of Herr Schhhu! - bless me! - i think ), but why don’t they just do what they enjoy to get their training in…racing.Makes sense to me, but then I don’t work in insurance or F1….
I’M LOOKING MORE FOR F1 DRIVERS THAT HAVE AN F1 SEAT AND AND AND SEEK THEIR PLEASURE ELSEWHERE….seems contracts or prima donnaism has stopped play to me!
If I had the chance I would be racing every day of the week…where’s the passion gone???
Sorry to hear that Rosbif….there’s only a certain type of prick that would go outta their way to do stupidity like that….like I said “he should keep his oxygen starved thoughts to himself”
What was the answer to #3 anyway? Was it Vettel? Seemed to obvious, but…
Nice one Blip. I think the driver’s these days are having the usual barrier put in their way….Corporate Interest….YAWN!! This is interesting I think….. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirling_Moss
….Lewis’ wiki update goes something like “went to the gym for 5 hours, made an appearance at XXX corporate event, had a nutrition packed meal and slept for 8 hours, ad nauseum….”
Should slip him something in his green tea…. :) Ah….Panis - Didn’t he get his “back-wheels-wet” more often than not? :P

WHERES THE PASSION GONE? Kimi races in other series during the winter. This year (after alot of pleading with ferrari) he participated in the scandinavian rally, he said its because he enjoys racing his engineer says it keeps his reflexes up. I know what yo mean though, back in the day F1 drives would participate in Le mans, the indy 500, the milla milagia - the one Stirling Moss one cant remember the name it was a road rally 300 miles long i think.

But you must also remember there were only about 10 races a year in the 50’s and 60’s not 16/17/18/19/20 that there is today, plus more fitness, testing and PA is required today so hey have less free time.

You can see it both ways really.
